Canada Day is coming up soon. Whether in the English speaking part of Canada or in the French. Celebrations take place in all provinces equally. Not only on this day everyone stands together when singing "O Canada". “O Canada” is Canada's national anthem. Originally called “Chant national,” it was written in Québec City by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier (words in French) and composer Calixa Lavallée (music), and first performed there on 24 June 1880. One more fact: The always controversial third sentence (True patriot love in all of us command.) was changed from the original English words “thou dost in us command” to “in all thy sons command” the first time in 1913, and it became something of a controversy again at the beginning in the late 20th century. After decades of debate, the lyrics were officially changed in 2018 to gender-neutral language: “in all of us command.”
So, let's go. Now we are all well prepared for the coming festivities. Do not be shy and sing along!
